Dec. 1, 2016, Xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Vancouver, BC
– The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) has announced the Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatoon, SK as the winner of the 2016 ITAC National Aboriginal (Indigenous) Cultural Tourism Award, presented by the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada.

The Wanuskewin Heritage Park Authority (WHPA) is a non-for-profit organization with a mission to advance the understanding and appreciation of the evolving cultures of the Northern Plains Indigenous peoples who have called the region home for more than 6,000 years. The National Historic Site is located five kilometres outside of Saskatoon, SK, and offers a combination of permanent and temporary exhibits throughout its cultural centre. Wanuskewin is also home of Canada’s longest-running archaeological dig; archaeologists have been unearthing treasures since the 1970s.

“Canada’s Aboriginal tourism story continues to unfold, and I am pleased to announce that Wanuskewin Heritage Park is the 2016 recipient of the National Aboriginal Cultural Tourism Award,” says Keith Henry, President & Chief Executive Officer of the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada. “All of our finalists offer exciting and dynamic experiences for visitors, further highlighting the strength of our industry nationwide.”

Finalists in the ITAC National Aboriginal (Indigenous) Cultural Tourism Award category included Wanuskewin Heritage Park, Eskasoni Cultural Journeys in Eskasoni, NS, and Long Ago People’s Place in Champagne Landing, YT.

The Canadian Tourism Awards are presented annually by TIAC to recognize excellence in Canada’s tourism by rewarding successful and innovative people, places, organizations and events that have gone above and beyond to offer a superior tourism experience to travelers in Canada.
