Tiohtià:ke (Montreal, Quebec)  – The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) and Destination Canada attended the Signature Travel Network Owners’ Meeting from September 4–7, 2024, at Le Westin Montreal. This prestigious event brings together CEOs and Presidents from leading US-based travel agencies, along with partners such as tourism boards, cruise lines, and hotels, making it a prime opportunity to showcase the richness and diversity of Indigenous tourism in Canada.

Destination Canada graciously sponsored ITAC’s attendance, allowing us to engage directly with travel industry leaders. ITAC Director of Marketing Tamara Littlelight and Senior Marketing Director, North America Kyla Hochfilzer participated in 20 scheduled 10-minute match appointments with agency owners from the Signature Travel Network. These appointments are invaluable in positioning Indigenous tourism experiences as must-see offerings for US travellers.

Meeting Highlights

The event started with a 10-minute General Session featuring an opening protocol led by Kahnawake Elder Kanahsohon Kevin Deer. Elder Kanahsohon Kevin Deer welcomed the 2024 owners to Montreal, a continuation of the relationship established during the 2023 Signature Travel Network Owners’ Meeting in Maui, HI. The opening protocol honoured the Kanien’kehá Nation as custodians of the lands and waters of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal.

The Welcome Reception featured an Indigenous Marketplace organized by Kahnawà:ke Tourism. The marketplace, named Ohterashon, meaning “the roots,” featured the Mohawk Council of the Kahnawake, through the talents of eight vendors from Kahnawake, Kahnesatake, Akwesasne, and Six Nations. These artists will showcase their skills and offer a range of handmade crafts, highlighting the depth and beauty of Indigenous artistry.

As a special gesture, ITAC member business Bastien Industries gifted the delegation with their premium moccasins and handmade leather goods. These items represent the excellence and craftsmanship that ITAC members bring to the global stage.

ITAC extends its sincere thanks to Indigenous Tourism Quebec for their guidance and support in ensuring Indigenous representation at this event. Their efforts have been instrumental in ensuring that our culture and heritage are meaningfully integrated into the program.

Indigenous Tourism Education Modules

ITAC is also proud to announce the development of The Indigenous Tourism Education Modules, a comprehensive three-part series presented in association with Destination Canada. These modules are designed specifically for travel trade professionals and will serve as a key resource to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Indigenous tourism in Canada. This initiative reflects ITAC’s ongoing commitment to enhancing Indigenous tourism opportunities and ensuring its rightful place in the Canadian tourism landscape.

ITAC looks forward to fostering new partnerships and continuing to elevate Indigenous tourism on the international stage.
