Elsipogtog Mi'kmaq Cultural Center

Immerse yourself in traditional Mi’kmaq culture with the Elsipogtog First Nation in New Brunswick and learn from the teachings of their elders. Spend an afternoon exploring the woods along the Heritage Path and sharing stories over traditional snacks before learning the fine art of basket making to weave a basket of your own to take home and treasure.

Smell the aromatic smoke of sweetgrass and sage in a traditional smudging ceremony in the welcoming community teepee. Head into the woods for a walk with your guide along the Heritage Path where you can learn about the plants, trees and berries which have been harvested within this community for generations and used for medicine, basket making and other time-honoured purposes.

After exploring the woods and learning some of its secrets, take a break to enjoy a homemade traditional Mi'kmaq snack and beverage before being introduced to the materials and skills you will need to make a nest basket under the guidance of the elders. While you work on weaving your basket, you can learn some traditional Mi'kmaq traditions and phrases. By the end of the day, enriched by the teachings of the elders, you’ll leave carrying a basket that you wove yourself.
