(Ottawa, Ont.) – The Aboriginal Tourism Marketing Circle (ATMC) and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), through the Aboriginal Procurement and Business Development Directorate, signed a major agreement yesterday in Ottawa. ATMC Chairperson Keith Henry and AANDC Director General Nicole Ladouceur signed the first ever Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning Aboriginal Tourism.
The Aboriginal Tourism Marketing Circle (ATMC) has launched a new online website tool designed to help Aboriginal entrepreneurs, bands and organizations explore opportunities to benefit from the growing cruise industry. Canada’s cruise industry is both successful and thriving, with growth predicted for 2014 and beyond. Canada’s three main regions with strong cruise ship presences include Pacific Coast & Alaska, Atlantic Canada and the Saint Lawrence. Other cruise regions include the Great Lakes and Arctic Canada. Canada’s cruise industry holds many opportunities for Aboriginal entrepreneurs, bands and organizations located in coastal communities. These include land excursions, accommodation for pre / post cruise, sales of arts & crafts, and more.

The last major national Aboriginal tourism study was conducted in 2002 (National Study of the Aboriginal Tourism Industry in Canada by Bearing Point and Goss Gilroy). Therefore ATMC, through AtBC, is undertaking to update all aspects of Aboriginal Tourism in Canada. Some of the main areas examined in the 2002 national study that ATMC can potentially leverage include:
- Profile of the industry and its economic impacts
- Identification of tourism trends affecting the sector
- Identification of issues and constraints facing the sector and individual businesses
WENDAKE, QC, April 25, 2014 — The countdown has begun! In less than a year, Québec Aboriginal Tourism (QAT) will host the International Aboriginal Tourism Conference in Fairmont Le Château Frontenac (on March 24-25, 2015).
This major conference will bring together 200 leaders, entrepreneurs and key players of the aboriginal tourism industry from Québec, Canada and other parts of the world like USA, Australia and New Zeleand.
