Parks Canada invites your organization to join in the celebration of Canada Historic Places Day (CHPD), which this year is celebrated on Saturday, July 6, 2019. Canada Historic Places Day is an inclusive national awareness and promotional event for historic places of all kinds and all types of designations, including places of historic significance to Indigenous peoples and parks which present their history.
Canada Historic Places Day was launched in 2017 by the National Trust for Canada, with the support of Parks Canada. In June of 2018, Canada Historic Places Day was unanimously endorsed by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers responsible for Culture, giving it the same status as Canada’s Parks Day, which was similarly established by environment ministers in 1990.
Celebrating Canada Historic Places Day is also celebrating our cultural heritage and promoting Canada’s many and diverse historic destinations. This national day promotes awareness, attendance and appreciation for today and stewardship for the years to come. It is a time for Canadians and our visitors to experience history in person. This year’s theme is:
Every Place, a story!
Canada Historic Places Day is timed to fall on the first Saturday after the Canada Day weekend, at the beginning of the busy visitor season, when the most historic places are open and when its promotion will have the greatest impact on the rest of the season.
Participation is growing! 414 historic places registered for the event via the National Trust website in 2018, up from 203 in 2017.
Awareness and engagement are increasing! More than 10,000 people visited the CHPD website in 2018, up from 3,000 in 2017.
